RELIEF
Thoughts and efforts now turn toward the difficult work of recovery. Portions of New York state have been severely impacted by the storm, and periodic updates will come to this list regarding Irene Relief Efforts.
Though we do not endorse any particular charity or entity, here is some information regarding relief efforts.
Red Cross – Needs immediate volunteers for storm relief in northeastern New York, and is offering fat-track disaster relief training to volunteers. Visit their website for more information: http://www.redcrossneny.org/ or call their Albany office at 518-458-8111. Donations can be made online and by mail that can be targeted directly at Irene relief efforts in New York.\\
Schoharie County Community Action Program Inc. put “flood fund”: on it and mail to SCCAP Inc. 795 E. Main Str., Suite 5 Cobleskill, NY 12043. Those with questions or in need of directions to the SCCAP site can call 518-234-2568.
New York FFA chapters throughout the state are looking for ways in which they can support relief and recovery efforts of agricultural families that have been affected by Hurricane Irene. The intent is to launch a statewide fundraising effort and to partner with agricultural businesses to raise money that can be best used to help farms in Schoharie County and other areas that have been hardest hit by flooding.

The Dyson Foundation has created two emergency grant programs for nonprofit organizations in Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Putnam, and Ulster counties in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene. The Dyson Foundation will expedite reviews of all requests for emergency funding. Nonprofit organizations can apply for emergency funds to help the organization recover from uninsured damages or losses incurred because of Hurricane Irene. To apply, please submit a one-page narrative describing the uninsured damages or losses and a budget and/or invoice of estimated recovery costs to submissions@dyson.org.
Other updates
Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured or underinsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster. Individuals can apply by calling (800) 621-3362 or navigating to www.disasterassistance.gov.National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) & the Corporation for National and Community Service is sending 6 AmeriCorps to assist in administrative tasks and muck-out coordination.

NYCVOAD - Supporting NYC with agency volunteers in their demobilization of Evacuation Centers.
Convoy of Hope: - COH is currently trying to source laundry detergent, dish soap, baby formula, adult and child diapers, other cleaning supplies, trash bags and hygiene products, as well as an augmentation of food and drink. COH is coordinating with NYVOAD and Salvation Army for a point of distribution near Albany.
Global Team Players Foundation: Over 400 athlete-volunteers from NY colleges are signed up to serve.
Lutheran Disaster Response: LDR - Upstate Network will hold next conference call on Sept. 2 at 10am. LDR is sending a National LDR mentor to assist.
American Red Cross: Red Cross is currently housing 245 people in six shelters in Eastern New York. In the downstate area the sheltering population is 178 in four shelters. There are 70 people being sheltered in Suffolk County, 3 people being sheltered in Nassau County, 55 in Orange County, and 30 in Westchester County. Two upstate counties are housing 67 people. There are 17 in Schenectady County and 50 in Schoharie County. There are 13 open shelters with no population. The nineteen active Red Cross shelters together represent a mix of Red Cross-managed shelters and shelters in which Red Cross is partnering with community groups.
Numerous community shelters have opened in Schoharie, Greene, Ulster, and Delaware Counties. Red Cross has been working with the Salvation Army, Walmart, and Voluntary Agencies Active in Disaster (VOAD) partners to get food, water, and miscellaneous supplies to these shelters. These efforts depend on the coordinated response of many state agencies as well. As we move into the recovery phase of the operation the challenge will be to track and meet food and water needs for those who may move from current shelters into other types of housing.
Red Cross continues to increase the numbers of disaster responders, adding over 500 in the past 24 hours, to bring the number of staffers to over 1200. The road situation has made it difficult to move staff quickly to locations where they are needed, and Red Cross relies on the information provided by the Department of Transportation and other agencies.
Red Cross has reached out to the Office of Fire Prevention and Control (OFPC) to obtain information on shelters opened by local fire departments. County Emergency Managers are also providing information on community shelters. Red Cross is currently working to develop a process to track community shelters’ openings, closings, and population numbers to provide as complete a picture as possible on sheltering operations as a whole.
Salvation Army: Salvation Army has feeding units in Schenectady, Delhi, Roxbury, Margaretville, Fleischmann and Schoharie. Continuing to provide feeding support to Montgomery County shelter in Amsterdam, and to Schenectady High School. All feeding numbers are low due to the deteriorated infrastructure (roads impassable/washed out, bridges gone). We are providing Essex, Clinton, and Schenectady Counties one semi-truck load of drinking water to each county. Staging 2,000 clean-up kits in Oneonta. Assessing damages in Essex and Greene counties. Sent baby formula, food, and diapers to Margaretville and Fleischmann. Sent two (2) semi-trucks of water to Delaware county for use at the hospital and nursing homes. 5 canteens deployed. 749 meals and 475 Drinks served. 428 snacks served.
BonaResponds: - BR is deploying to Margaretville, NY with 2-3 vans of volunteers & equipment for clean-up.
Southern Baptist: Southern Baptist Kitchen in Washingtonville NY (Orange County) will be serving its first meal today at lunch in partnership with the American Red Cross.
Mennonite Disaster Services: A team is mobilizing to Margaretville, NY. Coordinating with BonaResponds for a location. They have already been assigned a mud-out request from NYVOAD.
United Methodist Committee on Relief (NY): Sending 36,000 health kits to Schenectady Salvation Army for distribution. Ready with mud-out teams when needs are clarified
Hudson Valley 211: Working on referral system for NYVOAD/211 muck-out operation.
Northeast Region 211: Working on referral system for NYVOAD/211 muck-out operation.
